Toyota offers another entry in the affordable small cars – the 2013 Toyota Matrix. While the Matrix is not so impressive especially in its fuel rating, it makes up for it with its nice interior features. The 2013 Matrix has two trims – L and S. The L has a 1.8L engine capable of 132hp and 128 lbs. of torque. The S trim has a 2.4L engine that generates 158hp and 162 lbs. of torque. Fuel rating depends on the transmission, whether manual or automatic. At the minimum, the L trim’s fuel rating is 25 mpg city/32 mpg highway while the S trim’s fuel rating is 21 mpg city/29 mpg highway.

The 2013 Toyota Matrix has a lot of cargo space at 19.8 ft3, expandable up to 49.4 ft3 by folding down the seats. Aside from the abundance of cargo space, you will also like the availability of other storage compartments.

The interior features a basic lay-out with decent materials and ample room for average sized passengers. Critics remarked on the easy-to-use dashboard controls of the Matrix. Standard interior features include air-conditioning, heated mirrors, cruise control, tilting telescopic steering wheel, a 6-speaker sound system with CD player plus Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity, iPod/USB interface and auxiliary audio jack.

Other features are available in the higher trim like a metallic interior trim, upgraded cloth upholstery,  a premium audio system and a 6.1” touchscreen interface.

The 2013 Matrix received good scores in safety and crash tests, both for front and side impact protection. Standard safety features include front seat side airbags and side curtain airbags, disc brakes with antilock braking system, brake assist, stability/traction control, daytime running lights, and child safety locks.

The 2013 Toyota Matrix offers abundant room, plus an all-wheel drive feature on the S trim. You might like to take a look at other cars like the Subaru Impreza, which has better fuel ratings and interior and the Honda Fit which has more space.
